How did European explorers in the fifteenth century to find find their way at sea? They use to have radar or GPS devices to help them. Ship's captains make their own maps and pass them on to each other. But these maps didn't to be very reliable. On his voyage to the New World, Columbus to measure his speed and distance every day to work out where he was. Other sailors the sun and the stars to guide them, but they often make errors in their calculations. They frequently to sail miles off course. It wasn't until the eighteenth century that Europeans developed an accurate way to measure their location at sea.
